A 20-year-old Scottsdale man was killed when he lost control of his Pontiac GTO, sending it across lanes of traffic onto the dirt shoulder and eventually into a drainage ditch on the Red Mountain Freeway Saturday night.
Thomas Verdone was dead at the scene, near the Center Street overpass, according to the Department of Public Safety
Witnesses told police Verdone was driving over the speed limit in the eastbound lanes and may have been caravanning with several other vehicles when he wrecked around 9:37, said spokesman Harold Sanders. The accident shut down eastbound traffic for four hours.
DPS is still investigating the accident and is asking for any witnesses to call (602) 223-2212.
